We are re-starting the Meet the Escapees series, where you can get a picture of some of our members. We’ll be starting out by asking lots of our volunteer leaders nine questions about what makes them tick.
This week we’re meeting Loey Matthews, who has been leading hikes with Escaping your Comfort Zone for around a year, although it feels much longer! Loey can be found leading hikes from the back, with lots of encouragement and laughter.
Who are you, where are you based, and what do you do for fun?
What are the top 3 biggest achievements in your life to date?
What’s the most random fact about you, that most people don’t know about?
You are trapped on an island for a week with 3 people. Who would you choose, living or dead, and why?
I would love the opportunity to sit down with Siddhartha Gautama, better known as the Buddha, to study with him for a week. I’d also be keen to chat with bell hooks, the American academic and feminist, to pick her brain on race, gender and intersectionality, as well as Jenny Bruso, who runs the Unlikely Hikers Instagram account, to understand her thoughts on how we can make the outdoors a more welcoming place for everyone.
What does being outdoors mean to you?
Why did you become a volunteer hike leader? What’s the best part of being a hike leader?
Where is your favourite place to hike? Do you have any future goals you want to share?
What’s your favourite piece of gear to hike with?
Why would someone want to join one of your hikes?
Thanks for reading! If there’s a leader profile you’d really like to see, leave a comment and let us know.
If you’d like to come on one of Loey’s hikes, or any hike at all with Escaping your Comfort Zone, check us out on Meetup and see what we’ve got coming up.
